Credit union credit card rates
Five credit unions publish an ongoing purchase APR you can read today, on a rate sheet with a date on it. Three of them stop at 18 percent. If your card is above that, the gap is the whole story, and the list below is ranked on the top of each range rather than the advertised bottom.
Why the top of the range and not the bottom
Every card here advertises a rate "as low as" something. Almost nobody gets the low end. It is set aside for the best credit files, and you find out which end you are on after you apply. So the figure this page uses is the ceiling, which is the number you are guaranteed not to go above. It makes the list look worse and it makes the list true.
Two of the five are federal credit unions, which by law cannot charge more than 18 percent on a loan. That is why their ceilings match rather than one being a better offer than the other.
Do this first, because it is free
Call the number on the back of the card you already have and ask for a lower APR. It takes five minutes, it costs nothing, it carries no application and no deadline, and it works often enough to be worth doing before anything on this page. If they say no, ask what would change the answer.
Before you move a balance anywhere
A transfer only ends the debt if the balance clears before the promotional rate does. Work out what you would have to pay each month to clear it inside the window, then compare that to what you actually pay now. If your own statement says less, the balance will still be sitting there when the rate snaps back, and you will have paid a transfer fee for the privilege.
Check your own card against these
Drop a statement and the audit does that arithmetic with your APR and your balance, on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
Who is not on this list, and why
PenFed. Its summary of terms says a flat 17.99 percent and its own pricing list says Prime plus 14.74 percent. Both cannot be true today, and the live figure is not readable because the page builds its rates from a source that refuses us. So it is left out rather than guessed.
DCU. It merged into First Tech and now runs as two divisions of one institution. Listing both would name the same issuer twice.
Every 0 percent offer. Intro rates and promotional lengths move within weeks, and a stale term is worse than no name at all. This page carries ongoing rates only.
What this page will never do
Rank by what anyone pays us. The order is set by the rates and by whether you can actually apply, and nothing else touches it. A checker runs before every deploy that re-sorts every list on this site with the payout flags turned on and then off, and fails the deploy if a single position moves. If a link here is ever paid, it will say so on the link. See the affiliate disclosure and the methodology.
